Just Wine Club Dinner in Singapore


A wonderful evening held at the Teochew City Seafood Restaurant in Singapore for the Just Wine Club members. 

Co-hosted by Ch'ng Poh Tiong - Wine Writer and Wine Consultant to NTUC Fairprice and Michael Sawyer - Director and Winemaker for the Atlas Wine Group.

The dinner commenced with the aperitif being served, Rieslingfreak No. 3 2010, a bone dry Riesling from the Clare Valley, made by the master of Riesling, John Hughes. A very fresh and lively Riesling to start the evening and guests commented on the delicate, floral and lime flavors flowing from the wine.

When guests were seated a pair of Chardonnay’s followed including, the Cock + Bull Chardonnay 2010 and MadBay Chardonnay 2008 from Riverland and Western Australian respectively. A very flavorsome dish of Teochew cold selections were served including savory jellyfish, fried prawn roll and seasoned octopus. The Cock + Bull Chardonnay remained very fresh with citrus and some nice butterscotch characters coming from ripe Chardonnay. The MadBay offered some extra dimension with bottle age showing peach and creamy tones. The creation of the Teochew Seafood balanced very well with the pair of un-wooded Chardonnay’s.

Next on the delicious menu, Braised Duck, Teochow style was served with the Cock + Bull Shiraz Viognier 2010. Once again from the Riverland region of South Australia this wine is co-fermented with a portion of Viognier which members commented gave the wine elegance and gentle tannin on the finish. The savory duck loved the gentle spice and soft edging of this wine. Truly, an interesting food and wine pair for this course.

The last red wine was served which certainly won the crowd, which was the Journey’s End Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2008.  A powerful and complex wine from Australia’s famed region for Cabernet Sauvignon. Notable richness and varietal definition commented the guests. Certainly a triumph to be served with healthy portions of soft shell crab, coated in a very flavorsome sauce.

A grand finale was in store for all the guests, a new experience for most members, a tasting of the Tasmanian Single Malt, Helleys Road. “The elegance and subtle characters” of this Australian whisky commented, Poh Tiong as the finish was very gentle and delicate. Whisky aficionados in the room were swept away with this new discovery from down under.

The evening came to a close with the wonderful humor and charisma of Poh Tiong along with the detailed wine knowledge of Michael. A superb event with great food, excellent wine and a surprise whisky to finish!
